Privacy Policy

This policy describes the Texas Comptroller’s privacy and security practices regarding information collected from visitors to the site.

For statistical purposes and to better serve users of Comptroller websites, we use Web analytics software to generate summary statistics about agency websites. CPA collects data to help us improve Web content and site reliability and help us make sure the site is available to all users.

Generally, these analytics tools provide us various data points pertaining to usage, including most popular pages, the time of day sites are accessed, and how long users are spending on different pages. The information we collect consists of:

  • The name of the domain from which the visitor accesses the Internet (for example, "yahoo.com," if the visitor is connecting from a Yahoo! account)
  • The Internet Protocol number
  • The date and time that the page was visited

Security Policy

Web-based forms that collect transaction payments or personally identifiable information are encrypted using privacy and security safeguards such as a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) session or similar technology.

Cookies

“Cookies” are small pieces of data sent by websites and stored on Web browsers. CPA uses cookies for very limited purposes, including to distinguish visitors, to maintain sessions or to automate navigation. The Texas Comptroller’s office does not use cookies to collect personal information about our visitors.

Javascript

Some pages of the Comptroller’s websites use Javascript to collect Web page traffic activity and measure the performance of our servers and network. These scripts do not collect personal information about our visitors.

E-mail

We collect the e-mail addresses of those individuals who communicate with us via e-mail and those who voluntarily submit forms on our websites, and those who voluntarily provide their e-mail address.

On an opt-in basis, we use e-mail addresses and other volunteered information to send news, notices, and other information to those who request it.

We will not market the information we collect.

Public Information

Information that we collect will be retained and maintained as required by Texas records retention laws (Government Code Section 441.180 et seq.) and rules. Different types of information are required to be kept for different periods of time.

Information we collect may be subject to public disclosure under the Texas Public Information Act.

With few exceptions, you are entitled on request to be informed about information we collect about you. Under Sections 552.021 and 552.023 of the Government Code, you are also entitled to receive and review this information. Under Section 559.004 of the Government Code, you are entitled to have us correct any information about you in our possession that is incorrect.

Social Media

In the spirit of open, transparent government, the Texas Comptroller uses social media tools to post news, economic updates, and other announcements.

We maintain an active social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Scribd.

Users of these services are bound by those platforms’ terms of service and user agreements. Users of these services should be aware that any comments or posts they make in CPA’s social media forums may be subject to release to the public as required by the Public Information Act.
